Cave In

Corruption happens. We all know it -- we all recognize that fact. In fact, any time a variety of people are left alone, without oversight, it's going to happen -- and probably quickly! There are simply too many issues, too many problems, too many people with no sense of ethics or accountability.

This is the world in which we live. Avoiding this key fact about human nature can only lead to problems.

Highlights:

  • Quartzsite is awash in corruption. It's been many years since the town has seen an independent audit -- and there are many 'unexplained' issues. There is a great deal of money missing and the town has been reported -- by a councilman and an acting Mayor -- to be poised on the very verge of bankruptcy.

HURF funds are being used to balance what is left of the budget -- and even their accountant is publicly reminding them that they will have to one day 'pay the piper' and repay those HURF funds to the Highway User Revenue Fund.

The town is $2.7 million in debt to the HURF fund administered by the State of Arizona.

In very recent history at that point, several people had left office saying, "The town is broke, broke, broke." This information had never been announced to the people of Quartzsite, who were shocked to learn of their town's financial demise. No one had warned them, no indication had been offered.

I was elected to find out why.

Immediately following my election to the office of Mayor in May of last year [2010,] I was forced to set by and watch as steps were taken to withdraw almost ALL of the powers of the office of Mayor. This was done in open session while people in the audience booed the councilmen seated at the dais. One man, Wes Huntley, who was acting Mayor at the time, remained seated in the Mayor's seat, refusing to move, in spite of loud outcry from the audience until the last vote rescinding the powers of the position of Mayor of Quartzsite had been passed.

The meeting was complete and utter chaos.

This was not a proud moment for Quartzsite. People were stunned. How could this happen in a municipality in the Great State of Arizona? This is the land of Jan Brewer -- heroine of her people, dedicated to the preservation of a wonderful way of life that has been Arizona's since it became a State in our incomparable nation.

When the officials present were finished with the business of intentionally and completely destroying the position of Mayor, I was finally allowed to take my seat at the dais -- with no power left to me but the right to wield the gavel and oversee the meeting.

Though I fully understood the ramifications of what the council had accomplished, I had but a vague idea that I could do anything about it.

I am proud of my history as a Marine. When I stood my ground and refused to relinquish my office, the council organized against me. 'Ad Hoc' Committees and public censures that have been without merit have been held in an effort to embarrass and discredit me. Since these allegations are baseless, I have ignored these efforts. Invariably, such reports were placed on the front page of a local paper in Parker -- again, in an effort to embarrass and discredit.

Many of these efforts were seemingly orchestrated by the Town's Attorney, Pamela Walsma, who has now been terminated for undisclosed reasons. It is interesting to note that Ms. Walsma was abruptly terminated immediately following the situation in which Jennifer 'Jade' Jones was arrested, seemingly as Ms. Walsma was seen indicating that it was within the right of the council to have Ms. Jones removed from the podium during the Call to the Public portion of the meeting as allowed for under the First Amendment right of Freedom of Speech.

Since there are many videos and audio recordings of the proceedings, it would appear that we will have a proper review of these items to ultimately clarify any and all of the incidents that have occurred in Quartzsite. At that time, we will move to correct the record and hold those responsible formally accountable for their actions.

If these matters are correctly addressed, they will never again occur in Quartzsite -- or any other municipality. Without the ability to elect incorruptible individuals, there is little hope that Americans can take back their towns and cities from the corrupt.
